DAVAO’S GROOVE UNLIMITED SET TO COMPETE TO WORLD SUPREMACY BATTLEGROUNDS IN SYDNEY

Davao’s homegrown hip-hop dance talent, GROOVE UNLIMITED has made it to international stint and now gearing up to bag the crown in the World Supremacy Battlegrounds, the biggest international hip-hop dance competition happening in Sydney, Australia on November 30-Dec 2, 2012.

I’ve seen these guys perform on television, my son is an avid fan of hip-hop dance and these guys as well, but I really didn’t realize they were this authority in street dancing not until my son saw the video I uploaded at Youtube which I filmed during the ‘JAZ GRV Anniversary Dance Concert’ on November 10 at CAP Auditorium here in Davao City and without me knowing storm his whole class about it.

The ‘JAZ GRV Anniversary Dance Concert’ was held to raise funds and help send GROOVE UNLIMITED to Sydney to compete to World Supremacy Battlegrounds. I really enjoyed the show. I think all of Davao’s hip-hop dance groups were there to support and made that dance concert a success, some members in fact where those children that were once in conflict with the law and now finding a __niche in hip-hop dancing.

I’ve been to concerts before, celebrities on stage, musicals, recitals, stage plays but theirs was one of the touching hip-hop dance concerts I’ve been to. Just like many groups, conflicts are inevitable – different schedules, different lifestyles, different views, different personalities but what’s amazing is that they rise above their weaknesses and brought the group to limelight and now has made it to international competitions like WSB. I almost cried when Bryan Grandeza, the crew leader, they him master by the way, cried while telling the audience how he fathered the group and how  each one of them find a family and support from each other, it wasn’t just a dance for them but a group that made each one of them a better person. Bryan also talked about how they’ve exhausted all possible means just to put up funds so all of the crew listed in the official invitation can come and represent the Philippines to the world’s largest hip-hop battle.

They need our support guys – prayers, moral support and financially especially - their success is also our success. You can contact Bryan Grandeza at convey2ve@yahoo.com. You can also like their FB page – Groove Unlimited Dance Community for more details.

I took this video during their Dance Anniversary Concert on November 10 at CAP Auditorium here in Davao City.

We live near SM Lanang, but the irony of it all we hardly visit this place unless of course if there are important errands around here. The kids has been whining about watching the dancing the fountain, so on Saturday off we go. They're having hourly evening show on weekend so it's so convenient, unless it'll rain, the fountain court area is actually best for leisure walking after eating.

I've catched a video of the almost 10-minute fountain show, here enjoy; for better video quality shift to 360p.

PRESS RELEASE:

Globe Telecom recently announced that it has complete the modernization of its major infrastructures in the Davao region and key areas in Mindanao, forming a significant part of the rollout of its brand new network and intensifying mobile services in the vast regions which include Zamboanga and Misamis.

Chief Technical Adviser of Globe Robert Tan affirmed that the network build of Globe in Davao and its nearby areas is currently bringing-in better mobile coverage, increased data speeds and better network reliability in that part of the country, noting that ‘in terms of service quality after the upgrade, our call set-up rate improved dramatically. Now, a call you make in Davao consistently gets connected at even first try.”

He confirmed that Davao City and adjacent provinces are now fully equipped with new generation mobile systems capable of supporting fourth-generation Evolved High-Speed Packet Access or 4G HSPA+.

“In Mindanao, completed HSPA+ cell sites include Tipo-tipo in Basilan; Cabangsalan, Impasug-ong, Malaybalay and Sumilao in Bukidnon; Don Victoriano Chiongbian in Misamis Occidental; Norala and Santo Nino in South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Columbio, Isulan, President Quirino and Tacurong in Sultan Kudarat; the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur; Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental as well as the whole Compostela Valley. These comprise over 4,000 Globe cell sites already swapped with the newest, best-in-class infrastructure, while simultaneulsy increasing 4G HSPA+ footprint,” Tan said.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Co himself confirmed the enhanced network service, particularly in streaming data: “For those who have been following me in social media, I have a pleasant experience of visiting Davao which has now been modernized. I achieved speed up to 5 mbps in that network almost constantly.”

The Davao region also was the first to have the rollout of fiber optic cable which will significantly increase capacity and resiliency to accommodate and protect more voice, SMS and data traffic. Cu likewise confirmed that very soon, Davao will join Manila, Cebu and other ultra-connected cities in the world by experiencing LTE with the service’s quick expansion in the premier city of the South.

He previously stated that this undertaking is “unprecedented and unmatched by any other similar efforts in the country, which are merely adding-on to existing structures. The nationwide effort by Globe is a more deliberate and authentic change, empowering each of our subscribers, right here and right now in Davao, and very soon, with the rest of the country,” adding that Davaoenos and their immediate neighbors, who comprise the most populous region in Mindanao, are now more empowered to enjoy vastly-improved services, enabling them with much improved call quality, instantaneous text messaging capabilities, as well as richer, fuller web browsing experience.

The province of Sulu, the City of Surigao and Butuan are earmarked for modernization to the new Globe network for the fourth quarter of 2012. Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur is set to follow suit for the first quarter of 2012.

CHRISTMAS STARS AT DAVAO CITY HALL

Have you been to Davao City Hall lately? I brought my graders here a week ago, they’ve been whining to see the tree stars up close, it was an instantaneous decision so I wasn’t able to tuck in a decent camera, I took this photo with my CH W-900, and quiet a decent shot considering it only has a 5MP camera.

I really wish one Christmas in the coming years; this city can come up with an awesome Christmas village with brilliant and sparkling display of myriad lights. Considering that we banned fireworks in the city, then this could be, I hope, a splendid and merry alternative. If you have time, you can bring the kids around they’d love it here.

THE BEST INTERNET PROVIDER IN TOWN

I woke up with the sound of fire trucks passing by our narrow street, I was really thinking it was still part of my dream, but when I heard my neighbors humming … yeah, it’s fire at the end of the street, my dream angels just flew out of the window the last thing I know I was barefoot standing at our driveway, thank goodness it was declared fire out after 30 minutes.

I thought I was out of the rage, but I wasn’t spared, my internet cable was just swept by the rushing firetrucks, situations like this can really make one’s mood skyrocket to hell, gods of the internet hear my plea, I really don’t know what happened exactly during the action but the cable was practically pulled out from the post.

It took three days for the provider to finally fix it, I was out of the cyber circulation for some time and I was like a fish out of water. I finally decided to change my internet provider I’ve been with them for some time and was actually experiencing bad swings with them, but thing with time, they’re the hardest to find some time, but I finally decided. The reviews of this provider seem promising and they’re tagged so far as the best internet providerin my region, so we’ll see.

It just dawned to me now that half of my life’s circumstance is really dependent on this technology, its downside is also mine, if you guys are into same boat as me, you better get yourself the best internet provider to avoid mood dangles in the future.

Here’s a good internet provider that comes with ultra amazing add-ons, it’s like hitting several birds with one stone, try this site …www.comcast.com/internet-service.html

CREATE YOUR OWN PROMO: GOSAKTO WITH GLOBE PREPAID

I’ve been a prepaid Globe subscriber since that time I first had a cellphone and believe it or not I’ve been maintaining same number ever since and it’s still doing very fine. I always have the option though to shift to postpaid as this service is easily and conveniently accessible these days, but thinking about practicality and my current meager consumption, I thought I’d rather stay connected by paying first.

I’ve enjoyed quiet a number of Globe prepaid promotions in the past and it served me well, especially that my household has four active Globe subscriptions and you can just imagine the cost if I won’t strategize to cut our communication consumption, prepaid promos played so well in bridging this tension.

With the current convergence of mobile phones and the internet it’s quiet hard to imagine that there would still be prepaid promotions that will thread this all-together, well, I think I was wrong - Globe Telecom just revolutionizes prepaid subscriptions with the ‘create your own promo’ concept dubbed as GoSakto, with this promo prepaid subscribers like me can now design their own promo according to what they need. Say you want your promo to be just all call, all text, all surf or a combination of the three or two and or how long you want your promo to last - 1 day, 2 days it’s definitely your choice.

What’s so good about this GoSakto is that you can use your Facebook account to register your number and customize your promo.

There are three easy ways how to start using GoSakto:
  1. You can dial *143#, and wait for the prompt to appear, select your desired promo combination and you’re good to go.
  2. Visit Globe website at www.globe.com.ph/gosakto and register.
  3. Login to your Facebook account and go to https://apps.facebook.com/gosakto/ and register.

You can even share this promo with your friends and since it’s your promo you can customize it by naming it. This prepaid innovation is the first ever in the country that empowers its subscribers to create their own promo based on their budget and this is definitely just what a household of 4 that consumes text, call, and surf voraciously needs. Thanks Globe!

To tell us more about this promo, here’s Xian Lim for GoSakto;

FOREVER 21, ZEE LIFESTYLE and VASELINE has successfully and fabulously staged ‘Sunstyle Summer Skin and Fashion Fest 2013’ on April 20 at SM Lanang Premier here in Davao City.

The fashion show showcased the latest and hottest Forever21 summer collection. Gracing the runway were gorgeous ladies flaunting their Vaseline-daubed skin in charmingly mixed and matched top and shorts, floral and patterned trousers. The men in their carefree summer shorts also look stunning. The clothes look so light that truly put on that summer feeling of comfort and ease without forgoing style. The kid’s collections are just great, in fact, a week before this fashion show was staged I was able to score a yellow ballerina skirt for my daughter and she loves every bit of it. The kids’ line are simply fabulous, the models are equally so, they’re so adorable.

Forever21's colors and styles of summer are indeed fab, skin-baring, flowing and stunning. You can check out Forever 21 at the ground level of SM Lanang Premier for more of these dazzling collections.

I have few relatives and a number of friends who are now citizens and found a second home in Canada, the Canadian government has offered them lucrative jobs their government back home has not able to provide and once they’re there we call them Overseas Filipino Workers. Over the last decade it has been a trend among Philippine skilled workers to migrate to greener pastures, this exodus brought many happy and not so happy stories to some.

Even as they live their dreams in the foreign land they always come back to the grounds they’re rooted, and why won’t they come back, travelling these days isn’t as stressful as many years back, we have now a number of air service fleets and convenient air transport facilities, we can even get westjet seat sale if we’re in luck.

Though these fellas find comfort in other places, at the near end of their lives, they still come back and die in the grounds they’re born at; it’s one distinct Filipino trait. If you’re in Canada and planning to go back home to Davao, you can check out super saver seat sale at www.flightnetwork.com, they offer rock bottom seat sale from time to time, the money you can save on the airfare can be more than enough to buy goodies for your loved ones back home.

SMOKING VIOLATORS IN DAVAO CITY TO BE ISSUED CITATION TICKETS STARTING MAY 31

$

The Davao City Anti-Smoking Task Force will begin issuing citation tickets to individuals who will be violating the New Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance starting May 31, the 11th year of the city’s original Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance which was enacted in 2002.

According to Anti-Smoking Task Force head Dr. Domilyn Villarreiz, the citation ticket will indicate the specific violation and the corresponding administrative penalty. The person issued with the ticket has the option to either contest the violation in court or voluntarily pay the penalty of P500 imposed upon him or her to avoid being criminally prosecuted within 3 days from apprehension.

It is clearly stated however that the no contest provision can only be availed once and that the violator must undergo smoking cessation counselling. Failure to undergo counselling still warrants the filing of a case in court.

Ordinance No. 0367-12, Series of 2012, known as The New Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance was passed by the City Council last year and approved by Mayor Sara Duterte early this year. The said ordinance repealed inconsistent provisions of original comprehensive anti-smoking ordinance.

Aside from the issuance ofcitation tickets, the new ordinance now prohibits smoking of any tobacco product including e-cigarettes, shishas and the like, in all accommodation and entertainment establishments, workplaces, enclosed public places, partially enclosed public places, public buildings, public outdoor spaces and all public conveyances, government-owned vehicles and other means of public transport within the territorial jurisdiction of Davao City.

Likewise, the designated smoking area of commercial and business establishments must now be located in an open outdoor space with no permanent or temporary roof or walls located 10 meters away from entrances or exits with an area not larger than 5 square meters. All establishments caught violating this provision will be fined a maximum of P5,000 or 4 months imprisonment.

The Anti-Smoking Task Force already started a series of orientations to concerned parties including officials of the barangay, school administrators, restaurants owners and managers, tourism establishments and other business establishments supervisors to inform them of the new anti-smoking ordinance. NOTHING COMPARES TO RAISING CHILDREN IN DAVAO, NOTHING COMPARES TO COCA-COLA

$

0

When I got married in 1999, I was at some point certain I can be a good wife but I wasn’t really sure whether I can be a good mother or we can be good parents. I understand parenthood is something that involves enormous amount of sacrifice, sensible amount of money, an undivided attention, much of our time, emotional energy and a good working social and cultural environment to make this discourse work.

Just like any typical parent who wants nothing but the best for their children we did consider migrating to other country whose incidence to positive child-rearing was high. We have overflowing points at that time to qualify for migration being my husband a computer programmer and me, a teacher, but we forego of the opportunity after my father-in-law died and after lengthy family matter considerations.

Shortly after we’ve pronounced our decision, Davao City bagged the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines. I wasn’t surprised because ever since the Children’s Welfare Code of 1994 was passed, the local government of this city has been working to champion the cause of the children. It’s actually a long overdue recognition and it was well worth it, the city was awarded not once, twice but thrice this year as a Most Child-Friendly City in the country,  we then decided - let’s just stay home and raise our kids here.
I’d like to believe that we’ve made a good decision to stay and raise our kids here, as Davao City has provided us the infrastructure to upholding the rights of our children and has given us an overwhelming opportunity of work so we can steward them to become good and productive citizens of this country.

Vital to children’s growth and development is their health and nutrition and providing varied nutritious food to my children posed no problem at all, Davao City markets are blessed to have the freshest fruits, vegetables, sea foods and other meat products that are so affordable every parent of all stature can afford, there is no reason for a growing child in this city to be less nourished.

This factor is further enhanced by the passing of the landmark law, Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance in 2002, this gained Davao City various citations from all over the world being the first 100-percent smoke-free metropolitan in Southeast Asia and no one I think will disagree that a smoke-free environment is imperative to growing healthy and well children, not to mention it’s the cleanest and greenest city in the country.

Education is a prime factor to raising dynamic children. Davao City hosts a number of high-performing schools in the country, not to mention they’re just minute-drive away from our homes. We also have a lot of educational facilities and activities that promote culture, arts, entertainment and sports in the city – Special mention the two museums - Museo Dabawenyo, Museum of Davao in Insular Village which my kids frequent, Cinematheque Davao, which after knowing they can watch movie for free, have been whining to come over and over again, and who can’t miss out our Kadayawan Festival which is a very rich venue for our growing children to catch sight of our abounding and diverse cultural community unique only to our city.

Experts say, all study and not play makes a kid dull. Oh well, as the recognition asserts that Davao City is the Most Child-Friendly City in the country, we have all the accessible social and vibrant economic infrastructures to settle this. Davao City is the only city in the country where you can enjoy life both the tranquility of the highlands, the bustling lights and sounds of the lowlands, the pristine beaches and white sand in just a day.

Let’s start from the highlands, there are countless mountain resorts in the city today, your choice of accommodation and one of the places I bring my kids to chill out and allow them to shout their hearts out is Eden Nature Park, I find it a perfect place to wind down for children who’s now beginning to live with their iPads and HDTVs. It’s the best place to interact and see in flesh the real flying peacock, slide the rope and let them see a real deer grazing; it’s like a Science field trip and a week-end camp out rolled into one.

 Makakurat  baya mutubag ug question sa mga bata, labi na kung wala jud ka kabalo sa tubag;

‘Ma, why is Mt. Apo not erupting yet?’

‘What?’

But as parents it is our duty to process this, ‘God only knows’, yeah, safe answer I guess for someone who doesn’t know too what the answer is. But the other point is that we encourage creative and relaxed environment for their learning which is a very available resource in this city.

The beach in the lowland is my kids’ ultimate city break destination; they can stay here like until forever. I tell you, my patience here is really tested to some crazy levels and to a point where you can’t do nothing anymore but Coke-chill yourself and finger-lick a sack of Cheetos while gluing your eyes on the water.

And on some tight occasions where there’s no time to prepare for the beach, there are countless inland resorts in the city where you can bring your kids to unwind.

Davao City is also a convenient major hub to flying to other key cities in the country and the world; you can take your kids out of the city with no hassle at all, well, except for flight delays. Traveling does more to their learning than paying a tutor to learning Physics, how airplanes fly and an exciting adventure for them to learn how other people in other places live their lives. Nothing compares to listening to their stories about their trip while sending them to sleep. And all the more reason for me to work hard so I’ll have something for the next booking, geeeez!

Vital to a person’s holistic development is establishing a core of their spirituality. Davao City is a free and boundless city to practicing diverse religious activity. Parents with their children from all walks of life can practice their kind of religiosity in the city without being cuffed or fear of getting imprisoned, unless they go beyond what this city’s social more and law prescribed.

My children grow up so fast and that they’re now finding a unique style of their own. My eldest son who is now in his 8th  grade seldom go out with us anymore, not even in pictures, he’s now having a circle of his own – an adolescent stage where having a lot of mood swings and a lot of his social issues are being raised out. But I’m confident that with the values we seed in them that would be their guiding bough to bear good fruits in the future. I also would commend the efforts of the city authorities that worked so hard to free this city from illegal drugs that in so doing would save our youth from danger.

I’m attesting to this common notion that raising children these days is harder than any parent could have thought easy before, but I bank on the idea that this social function can be as rewarding if parents will work hand-in-hand to raising  compassionate children and who believe in the means of their government that works to uphold the rights of the children that works to provide a good quality environment to nurture their skills and talents which in the long run a productive and vital component to building a strong, solid yet benevolent nation.

I understand that not all children in this city have the same, if I may say privileged circumstance as my children, but what is important is that we see the government of Davao City has worked to leaving a legacy of outmost optimism and a policy that upholds and protects the rights and brought in the torch of willpower to better the lives of every children in this city.

I remember my mother once said to me, to teach my children 20 years before they were born. I’d like to believe we’re doing this now for the good of our children’s children.

Commendation also goes to the vibrant corporate community of this city; they’ve provided opportunities to many parents and would-be ones that in return will have the means to raise their children.

And at the end of the day, nothing beats a family that goes home to a happy, story-laughter-filled dinner nga gi-ubanan sa iced cold Coca-Cola.

And as to my hesitations whether I can be good a parent? 15 years after, I found my parenting niche, just like the three-fold guiding principle of Coca-Cola to be innovative, I’m working on my parenting strategies as innovative as possible – a kind of raising children that is still anchored on the values and traditions of the past but keeping abreast with the development as to where this city and this country is heading.

Another is to be creative. Creative parenting is not new to me; in fact, I just bought a double XL shirt as my creative ‘get-along shirt’ for my kids to settle their issues before they’ll raise it up to me.

And lastly, focus. Just like Coca-Cola who works and focus on unique ideas that impacts the saturated marketplace, this lowly parent on the other hand works on eliminating distortions – gadgets, TV, etc. and trimming it down so we all can hit our targets and get it done.

I’m certain I’ve got the handle of it and have never regretted we’ve stayed in Davao as …

Nothing compares to raising children in Davao City, nothing compares to Coca-Cola, #WalayKaparehas.

Kicking off the first of this Saturday series on August 10 is a 1920’s-themed launch event. Come in your best gangster or flapper ensembles and enjoy the music of Kwatro Medya, The Sound of Go, and a DJ set by Cheekie Albay of Hiphouse. The event is absolutely free. In fact, Blue Room is giving away a lot of freebies to celebrate the launch, such as free drinks for early birds who come before 9:00 PM, free shots for ladies who come before 10:00 PM, and gift certificates for the best dressed, so be sure to come in your best 1920’s outfits.

PROHIBITION SATURDAYS AT APO VIEW HOTEL'S BLUE ROOM

The Prohibition era in 1920’s was a particularly interesting time in American history, especially in terms of music, fashion, and partying. Some would say the same can be said about Davao these days, but hey, let’s not go there. Let’s just say Prohibition Saturdays is an avenue for the party-loving crowd to enjoy good music, classic cocktails, and have a roaring good time.

Special promos on drinks are also offered every Saturday, such as 50% off on selected cocktails for the ladies, local beers are only P50, Margarita pitchers go for P500, and buy-one-get-one on tequila shots the whole night. Blue Room is located at the ground floor of Apo View Hotel, an iconic local landmark in Davao City with a history spanning 65 years.

Blue Room follows the success of the hotel’s famous night spots, such as One Down Disco and Penec Bar in the 1980’s, Spam’s and Pag-asa Bar in the 1990’s, and Liquid in the 2000’s. For updates on Prohibition Saturdays, check out Blue Room’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/blueroom.apoviewhotel
